Because digital cameras don't use film they have to store their images elsewhere. The camera will store images on a memory card for you and then you have the option of deleting the photo or keeping it. If you decide to keep it you can then transfer it from the memory card to another storage device such as a computer hard drive, a flash drive, a DVD or a CD disk. However, there are some memory cards that are designed for permanent storage use.
Photo files can be quite large so you may find it helpful to install extra memory or a zip drive onto your computer. There are some computer devices available such as portable photo albums that are made specifically for storing digital photos. You can also store your photos online as there are various internet sites made for digital storage. Some of them are free and others charge a fee.
DVD's and CD's are relatively cheap and generally cost about a dollar per disk.
