Wide Angle Lenses
These wide angle lenses are ideal for panoramic photography as they allow you to get a wide view of the scene you want to shoot. For a 35 mm camera, anything less than 40mm in focal length is generally considered a wide angle lens. Common wide angle lenses for a 35 mm camera are 35, 28, 24, 20, 17 and 14 mm.
A wide-angle is basically a short focal length lens which is designed give you a large, wide field of view. It is also ideal for working in confined areas. Wide angle lenses can make objects close to the lens appear large, while background objects shrink in size.
Many people use a 28mm lens as a wide angle lens for their 35mm camera. This focal length gives you typical wide angle effects without distorting images. These lenses also produce good depth of field at all apertures. Close view images given by wide angle lenses can appear distorted, but are natural ways of seeing objects up close. The lenses magnify objects closest to the camera. You must move in close to fill the frame when shooting people with a wide angle lens. They are ideal for special effects such as deliberate distortion.
With a wide-angle lens, you should use a lens shade or hood as strong light can cause flare when reflected between the internal elements of the lens. Lenses can range in price from about $45 to several thousand. Lenses come in different apertures and in auto and manual focus models.
