Fluorescent Lighting or Cool Lights
Fluorescent lighting fixtures are made of two major things, the lamp and the ballast.
A fluorescent tube holds mercury vapor that is ionized by an electrical current flowing through it. It produces visible light by striking phosphors that coat the inner tube. They are more efficient, cooler and last longer than hot lights such as tungsten and metal halide.
Fluorescent lighting products are ideal for video, digital and analog photography, stage, studio, TV, film, and medical use. Fluorescent lighting uses a fraction of the power compared to other systems. They are cool and comfortable and safer to handle. New phosphor coatings are so correct, you will need little or no filtration and the lamps render skin tones very well.
Fluorescent lighting can cover large areas and produce a soft uniform light that is fairly easy to control. They come color corrected for daylight and tungsten. This allows you to mix fluorescent with other lighting systems, natural and artificial. Accessories and light modifiers are available to help effect your lighting. These include barn doors, grids, louvers, filters and reflectors.
Fluorescent lighting is common in video and digital systems as it is easy to transport, handle and control. The lighting can range in price form a few dollars for a lamp to several thousand for a system kit.
