A light dome works much the same as a light tent as the dome covers the item you are going to photograph. You simply place the dome over the object and take the photo from an opening in the top of the dome. Some domes come with camera brackets on them so you can attach the camera right to the dome. A dome will cut down on reflection and evenly distribute the light. It will also help eliminate hot spots and inconsistent lighting while filtering and diffusing the light coming in for soft and continuous light. They can be used outdoors with natural light or indoors with artificial light. They are ideal for shooting close up items such as jewelry, stamps documents, gems, evidence and coins. Domes are available in various materials, sizes and shapes and cost about $45.
